Ricci Scholars are expected to prepare a well-structured research proposal that demonstrates focus, clarity, and academic rigor. The guidelines below outline the required formatting and suggested organization to help you develop a strong and compelling proposal.

Proposal Formatting

• 2 pages single-spaced.
• A bibliography of 4-6 sources.
  • The bibliography does not count towards the page-length.
  • Note, there is a dedicated Ricci Scholars librarian available to help locate sources; feel free to email Monique Clark for assistance.

Proposal Organization

Introduction (Paragraph 1)

The larger issue that you would like to explore. 

• What is the ‘big’ theme? Why is it important?

Project Scope (Paragraph 2)

The more narrowly focused project that you will pursue in order to illuminate the larger topic.

• What, specifically, is your project about?
• State the research question clearly here.

Italian and East Asian Contexts (Paragraph 3)

Some discussion of the existing literature on the topic in both Italy and your chosen East Asian destination.

Methods (Paragraph 4)

Discussion of onsite methods and setting. 

• What information do you need? Where will you go to find it?  What methods will help?

Conclusion (Paragraph 5)

Discuss the project as a whole and why it matters. 

• How does Ricci factor into your broader academic and professional/educational goals?
