The History of St. Ignatius

Through focusing on academic excellence, the promotion of service, and our commitment to solidarity and justice, a Loyola education will prepare you to become an intellectually curious, ethical, reflective, and active citizen of the world.

Our Jesuit mission is rooted in a 450-year-old tradition that began with St. Ignatius of Loyola. He is known for his accomplishments and gifts to the world, such as the founding of the Society of Jesus and the creation of the Spiritual Exercises.

But Ignatius was not born a saint. As a soldier who was known for his vanity and exploits, Ignatius was injured by a cannonball in the Battle of Pamplona. During his long recovery, the only books available to him were tales of Jesus, Mary, and the saints. Inspired, Ignatius pledged to serve God and followed the examples of saints who had lived in poverty and isolation. In time, and after deep reflection and discernment, Ignatius found his own unique path as a contemplative in action: someone who balanced intentional thought and self-awareness with having a direct, positive impact on the world. Ignatius and his close companions would go on to form the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, united by a mission focused on education.
